Summer is just around the corner and your family may be starting to plan a summer road trip. You may wonder is a car service necessary before heading down the road? Now is the time to take care of any car repair issues that are needed as well as the recommended car maintenance items. Don’t let your trip turn into a frustrating experience because of a flat tire or an overheating engine.

So is a car service necessary before your road trip? Here are few tips that are important to think about:

  1. Read your owner's manual so you know your vehicle. You can find out everything you need to know about your vehicle--from using overdrive when you tow a trailer to how to change a flat tire.
  2. Know the signs of potential problems. Be aware of the signs of potential problems, such as vibrations, unusual noises, hard shifting. Let your car repair specialist know what you have observed.
  3. Pre-Trip Inspection. Schedule a pre-trip inspection a few weeks before your road trip so that you have time to take care of any needed work, such as the following:
    • Have the oil (and filter) changed if it is due while you are gone?
    • Check tires for tread depth, air pressure, alignment, and balance. A tire rotation might be wise too. Remember to check the spare.
    • Inspect the car battery to make sure it is holding a strong charge and clean off any build-up of corrosion on the terminals.
    • Check all fluids to make sure they are fresh and effective—antifreeze/coolant, brake, power steering, transmission, windshield cleaner. They may just need to be topped off, or it could be time for fresh fluids.
    • Replace the air filter if it has reached the recommended mileage interval,
    • Make sure the horn is working for use during an emergency situation.
    • Replace windshield wipers if they are older than six months.
    • Replace burned-out or broken light bulbs and clean the lenses.
    • The air conditioner should be blowing out cold air.
  4. Emergency kit in the trunk. Pack a first aid kit, roadside flares, quart of oil, extra fuses, flashlight, multipurpose tool, spare tire and jack, a few rags, pocket knife, phone charger, bottled water, blanket, and some snacks.
