Many vehicle owners may be wondering if a tune up is still necessary for today’s modern vehicles. Years ago, a “tune-up” simply meant having your vehicle serviced to keep it running at its best. However, with more sophisticated computer-controlled engines, a car diagnostic test is needed so your mechanic can pinpoint potential problems lurking under the hood. Tune-ups remain a vital part of vehicle maintenance and should never be overlooked. So what does a car tune up consist of today?

If you’ve taken the time to read through your vehicle owner’s manual, you will notice a number of service intervals. A tune-up is identified as a major service and includes replacement of the spark plugs and spark plug wires. However, with newer vehicles, this is only necessary around 100k miles.

Nowadays, instead of a large robust coil with wires carrying an electrical spark to the cylinder, sophisticated engines use a “coil over plug design” with many small coils. This is an awesome design and great engineering, but with one exception. When a spark plug wears, the voltage demand rises exponentially. These new coils don’t have the capacity to hold a reserve in order to meet the extra load so will overheat to the point of failing. This may require changing the spark plugs earlier than the recommended interval. It is common to see miss-fire codes when the “check engine” light comes on, and all too often, indicates a failing ignition coil.

When was the last time you had your vehicle tuned up? Have you been noticing any problems with engine performance or poor gas mileage? It’s more enjoyable to drive your vehicle when it is running at its peak performance.
