With summer on the way, many people won’t be thinking too much about headlights or brake lights. It is, however, very important if you happen to be driving down a dark road on a late summer night. Driving without brake lights or headlights is dangerous for you and other drivers.

What causes brake lights not to work? Some of the most common reasons lights may not work are:

  • Burned-out bulbs—newer vehicles have lights that are on constantly.
  • Brake light switch has become worn out and dirty so it cannot transmit the right signal.
  • Blown fuse in the switch.
  • Wiring in the socket may be dirty, corroded, or just worn out.
  • A defective light switch.

The most obvious thing to check first is for a burned-out bulb since it is the easiest and cheapest repair. If this isn’t the problem, ask your mechanic to check out the light switches, sockets, or the electrical system, which runs on a series of switches and fuses to protect circuits. Most of these issues can be repaired fairly easily and inexpensively.

If you have already made it a practice to walk around your car every few days to inspect your tires, windows, and car body before driving off for the day, take a few extra minutes to include an inspection of the lights too. In addition to the brake lights and taillights, make sure that the turn signals, fog lights, backup lights, and tail lights are lighting up as they should.

Wondering what causes brake lights not to work? Contact our ASE Certified technicians at Proshop Automotive for more information about brake lights and headlights and to schedule an appointment. Our auto shop proudly serves residents in Colton, CA, and the surrounding areas.
