“Oops! All of a sudden my vehicle is pulling to the right yet I’m steering straight ahead! This is so annoying and I worry what this will do to my tires. I’m wondering what causes a wheel alignment to go bad.” Does this sound familiar?

We wish it wasn’t true, but wheel misalignment just comes with vehicle ownership. This will occur naturally over time, but it’s more likely caused by a specific incident. Misalignment is when your tires are not pointing in the same direction as the steering wheel. It negatively affects your steering, suspension and tires, but more importantly, it compromises safety on the road.

What causes a wheel alignment to go bad?

  • Hitting curbs -- Hitting even the smallest curbs or a concrete parking spot divider can be enough to cause your vehicle’s alignment to go bad.
  • Speeding over speed bumps -- Hitting speed bumps too fast often causes a suspension misalignment. Also, remember heavier vehicles are more prone to damage than lighter weight cars.
  • Hitting potholes -- The impact of hitting a pothole pushes the wheel—and the suspension—both backward and upward. A severe impact like this, or several smaller impacts over time, can lead to a misaligned tire as well as damage to suspension, shocks, steering, tires, and wheels.
  • Auto accidents -- Even a fender bender can cause serious damage to a vehicle’s alignment and suspension. It may not have caused visible damage, but it may have been enough to necessitate an alignment service.
  • Vehicle maintenance neglect – A periodic car alignment service will boost your car’s handling and safety, improve fuel economy, prevent damage to vital vehicle components, and help extend the life of your tires.

Wheel alignment issues aren’t always obvious right away. They tend to get worse over time, so don’t wait to have your alignment adjusted.
