If you’re driving down the road and start to hear unusual noises or feel strange vibrations in your vehicle, don’t wait for something bad to happen before heading to your auto shop. Because identifying transmission issues isn’t always easy, the damage could be taking place, resulting in a costly transmission repair. Most vehicle owners understand that it is much less expensive to keep up with regular transmission service than to pay out big bucks on transmission repair.

So what are the symptoms of a bad transmission? Be aware if you notice any of the following problems:

  • Shifting Problems. You may start to hear whining, clunking, or thumping sounds when shifting, or it may be getting harder and harder to shift gears, accompanied by gears jerking, stalling, or popping.
  • Burning Smell. The transmission fluid could be overheating. Stop driving, let it cool down, and then head to an auto shop.
  • Leaking Fluid. A puddle of transmission fluid under your car may mean you are driving with low levels of transmission fluid. Your mechanic can pinpoint the source of the leak and then recommend some type of transmission repair.
  • Excessive Noise. A transmission flush will often quiet down a noisy transmission. But if that doesn’t work, schedule a more thorough inspection of the transmission.
  • “Service Engine Soon.” If you are having shifting problems together with the dash warning light, schedule a diagnostic test. It could be possible that just a sensor has gone bad.
  • Complete Transmission Failure. If you have consistently neglected recommended transmission service, your transmission may fail completely and leave you stranded somewhere. This may require a transmission rebuild or replacement.

Word of advice: The transmission unit is constantly exposed to both heat and stress, so it is important to follow the transmission service schedule (about every 60,000 to 100,000 miles) recommended in your vehicle service manual to keep your vehicle running efficiently for as long as possible.
