Experienced drivers know that the most important thing to remember about road safety is staying up-to-date with vehicle maintenance. However, some drivers think that if their car can get them from point A to point B, everything is okay. They usually don’t give their tires or car battery a thought until they jump in their car and find that they are stuck in their driveway with a car that won’t move.

Regardless of whether you are an experienced driver or a new driver, here are some tips that will help keep your car operating safely:

  • Wiper Blades: Because wiper blades wear out over time with exposure to the elements, they should be replaced about every six months. Worn blades leave streaks that are difficult to see through and can even scratch the windshield.
  • Oil Changes: Oil keeps your engine healthy by keeping the components of your engine moving together with minimal friction. Oil becomes dirty over time and needs to be changed on a regular basis.
  • Tires: Worn-out tires don’t handle well (especially in bad weather) and risk blowing out. Tires should be rotated about every 5,000 to 6,000 miles (or at about every oil change). Wheel alignment should be checked at least once a year to ensure your steering is straight and your tires are connected to the road for maximum traction.
  • Check Battery Charge: A dead battery can leave you stranded without any sign of trouble. If your battery is hitting the four-year mark, you will want to check it regularly as it may not be holding a strong charge.
  • Brakes: Check the thickness of your brake pads every time you rotate your tires and change them when they start to get too worn. Remember to check the condition of the rotors too.
  • Air Filter: The air filter catches the debris from the air that is pumped into your engine, eventually clogging it up. It should be changed about every 15,000 to 20,000 miles.
  • Hoses & Belts: Belts and hoses will become brittle over time and can break and crack with dire consequences. Check them at every oil change, although they should last up to 60,000 miles or more.
  • Spark plugs: If the spark plugs are going bad, your engine has to work harder, causing inconsistent performance. They should be replaced about every 60,000-75,000 miles.
