Summer has arrived and that means it is time for fun road trips to explore our country. Part of planning for your trip should include an inspection of all the systems of your vehicle so that it is as safe as possible to drive. Ask your auto shop mechanic to perform a pre-trip auto service and make any necessary repairs before you head down the road.

Here is what should be included:

  • Tires - Make sure you have the correct inflation pressure, that the tread is adequate, alignment is correct, and tires rotated. Consider purchasing new tires if your tires are fairly worn.
  • Brakes - To meet the challenges of unknown road conditions, make sure your brakes are functioning properly.
  • Battery - Check the level of battery fluid and clean any corrosive buildup from the terminals and cable clamps. If your battery is more than three years old and starting to lose its charge, consider replacing it.
  • Radiator - Coolant protects the engine from overheating so make sure it is at the correct level.
  • Hoses and belts - Inspect for cracking, soft spots or other signs of poor condition.
  • Air filter - Replacing the air filter will help keep the motor running smoothly.
  • Oil change - If it is close to the time for an oil change, have it taken care of before leaving home.
  • Fluid levels - Engine fluids lubricate and carry heat away from critical parts of the engine. If the level gets too low, the cooling effect is reduced, increasing the possibility of the engine overheating.
  • Air conditioner - A properly working A/C not only makes the drive more pleasant, but it also helps reduce fatigue and maintain driver alertness. Be sure the refrigerant level is adequate.
  • Emergency kit - This should include water, snacks, jumper cables, flashlight (with extra batteries), road flares, first aid kit, blanket, and cell phone and charger.
