If you own a car, it can become at risk for theft, whether it’s in your driveway or in a parking lot. Be smart and make your car a less appealing target and more of a challenge to break into so that potential thieves will keep moving on. Your auto shop will be happy to provide you with more information to help protect your car.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau has four recommendations to help avoid potential theft problems:

  1. Use Common sense – Always roll up your windows completely, lock the doors and take your keys with you. Keep valuables out of sight--purses, wallets, cell phones, clothes, and even change are attractive and easy targets. Don't leave spare keys in the car or hide them outside because a thief will be able to find them. Park in well-lit areas that have a lot of foot traffic, such as the end of a row and near a light. Avoid leaving your car parked in public lots for a long time. If you use valet parking, just give the attendant the ignition key.
  2. Use visible and audible devices to deter thieves – You may want to consider having your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etched into your windows. It makes your car less attractive to a thief who wants to send your car to a chop shop. A steering wheel lock is highly visible and loud alarms will alert you and others that your vehicle is being tampered with.
  3. Use immobilizing devices – These devices actually shut off your car's electrical or fuel supply. Without a key or knowing where the hidden switch is located, a thief can't drive your car away.
  4. Use tracking devices – This enables police to track a car and recover it more quickly.

Remember: Be observant of what's going on around you, get descriptions of suspicious people and vehicles, including license plate numbers. If you catch a thief in the act, call 911 but don't approach the person. Your safety is more important than the car.
