Winter is close at hand in many parts of the country. If you haven’t already done so, schedule an auto repair service for an inspection of all the systems in your vehicle. Your auto repair shop will make sure that all maintenance items are up-to-date so that you know you are driving as safely as possible.

Even though scheduled car maintenance can sometimes cost more than what your budget allows, try to remember that in the long run, you are saving money by preventing a costly repair and by prolonging the life and safety of your vehicle. Here are some of the most important auto repair service items to be taken care of before winter hits in full force:

  • Tires—Make sure your tires have the correct inflation pressure, that the tread is adequate for winter roads, that the wheels are in proper alignment, and that the tires are rotated. You may want to install snow tires if you will be driving a lot in icy or snowy conditions.
  • Brakes—Schedule a brake inspection to make sure your brakes are functioning properly to meet the challenges of wet and icy roads.
  • Car Battery—Your battery will get a lot of use during winter’s dark days. Make sure it is keeping a charge, and clean any corrosion away from the terminals and cable clamps and check the level of battery fluid.
  • Oil and Filter—Keep clean fresh oil in your car to help it run smoothly and efficiently. Cold weather makes dirty oil more sluggish so check the dipstick several times between oil changes. If the oil level is consistently low, have your mechanic check for leaking seals.
  • Radiator—Check the antifreeze/water mixture as it protects the radiator from freezing, as well as protects the engine from excessive friction and overheating.
  • Hoses and belts—Make sure there are no cracks, soft spots, or other signs of deterioration.
  • Air filter—Replace the air filter to help keep the motor running smoothly.
  • Emergency kit— Whether you’re going for an extended road trip or a short drive in the snow, have an emergency kit in the trunk, which should include water, snacks, jumper cables, flashlight (plus extra batteries), flares, a first aid kit, warm blankets, and cell phone with charger.
